Custom manufacturing of microscope replacement parts: when the original falls short
In light microscopy, it is not uncommon for the entire workflow to be disrupted by a single component failure—whether it involves a simple mechanical element, an actuated subsystem, or a more complex module related to illumination or sample manipulation.
Original spare parts are sometimes no longer readily available, either because they are no longer manufactured or are supplied only as part of larger assemblies. In addition, the required investment in some original parts may exceed the available budget or even the needs of the specific application. In such situations, there is a natural need to find a solution that restores full functionality while respecting the conditions of everyday operation.
Accordingly, we introduced a new service: custom and functional manufacturing or modification of microscope replacement parts.
Our long-standing experience in developing microscope modules, precision mechanics, and specialized components enables us to offer parts that integrate seamlessly into an existing system where the original solution is unavailable, unsuitable, or requires modification.
Opportunities for innovation or optimization
Many components—although mechanically simple—are critical to the function of the microscope. They do not always exist in a form that matches current user requirements, and often there is a need to adjust the design, add a specific functionality, or ensure compatibility between modules from different manufacturers.
This service therefore goes far beyond producing a direct copy of the original part. Every project starts with an analysis of the existing solution and the user’s real needs. Sometimes a precise replica is appropriate; other times, improvement is the better path—using more durable materials, refining geometry, increasing rigidity, or optimizing ergonomics. As a result, the final parts often exceed the performance and durability of the original components.
How the process works
Every part must be compatible with the optical system, mechanical tolerances, and real-world operating conditions. For this reason, the manufacturing process is based on detailed measurement, modelling, and testing. We use a combination of metal and polymer materials, precision machining, 3D printing for prototyping, and fine mechanical finishing.
We approach each project individually. We begin by discussing the user’s requirement, collecting the necessary inputs, and performing an initial technical assessment. Based on this analysis, we propose the optimal approach, the design of the replacement part, and possible variants of the solution. The initial consultation and proposal are non-binding and free of charge. This process ensures an efficient path to a functional solution with minimal effort required from the user.
Our service is intended for all microscope users, including research laboratories, academic institutions, and industrial environments.
Partnerships with microscope distributors and manufacturer representatives
This replacement-part service is designed not only for end users, but also for distributors and suppliers of microscopy or laboratory equipment. We welcome partnerships that simplify and accelerate their internal processes. We can take over complete communication with the end customer, arrange the collection of original or damaged parts, carry out a technical assessment, and propose a suitable solution that saves both manufacturing capacity and delivery time. Suppliers can therefore offer their clients fast, accurate, and highly individual solutions—without the need to develop every atypical component internally.
Example project: replacing worn mechanical components with a more durable solution
In microscope assemblies, sensitive mechanical components may gradually wear out over time. Continuous mechanical stress or surface degradation can lead to reduced accuracy, uneven movement, or eventual loss of function—all of which directly impact the operator’s comfort and the reliability of the instrument.
A typical example is our replacement of deformed aluminium guide rails, where repeated loading caused bending and loss of stiffness. We designed and manufactured new rails from high-quality steel, using precise CNC machining and appropriate surface treatments to increase durability. This not only restored the original movement function but also significantly extended the lifetime of the entire system. The result is stable handling and improved reliability during daily use.
